SCHOOL NEWS (College, SD & NE Schools)

Governor Kristi Noem has now closed all South Dakota schools until March 27th.

The University of South Dakota will extend spring break one week.  On-line delivery of classes will begin Monday, March 23rd. On Campus classes to resume April 6th


The Yankton School District Administration Office and all Attendance Center Offices will be closed to the public beginning Thursday, March 19.  Phone and E-mail information is located on the Yantkon School District webstie for each location.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association has cancelled all Spring Sports through April 5th.  Yankton will not participate in state athletics until after April 7.

The Nebraska School Activities Association has suspended Spring Sports practices until Monday, March 30th and competitions until Thursday, April 2nd.

The NAIA and Great Plains Athletic Conference have cancelled the remainder of the Spring Sports seasons for all teams.

All Nebraska district and state speech contests have been suspended until further notice.

Nebraska state FFA and FCCLA have been canceled.

The South Dakota State Student Council March 29-31 has been canceled.

Hartington-Newcastle is closed for a period of two weeks.  The school facility will be closed during that time.  School lunches are being delivered.  Lunch order form is at

Cedar County Catholic Schools will be closed for two weeks.

Creighton Community School will be closed through Monday, March 30th.

Crofton and Crofton St. Rose will be closed until March 31st

Laurel Concord Coleridge will suspend classes and activities on Wednesday, March 18th and will reassess the closure every two weeks, beginning April 1st

Osmond Community School will be closed until March 31st.

Pierce Public and Zion Lutheran Schools will be closed from March 17-30.

Verdigre schools will be closed through Monday, March 30.

Wausa Public School will close for 2 WEEKS.

Wynot Public Schools will be closed through Friday, March 20th.

EVENTS, Yankton and Surrounding Areas

The City of Yankton Citywide cleanup previously scheduled to begin March 21st with free drop off at the Transfer Station and curbside pickup April 6th has been postponed indefinitely.   Any questions, please contact 668-5213.

Boys & Girls Club of Yankton will be closed until further notice

Hy-Vee stores will reserve one hour of shopping time each day for customers at higher risk for illness. Customers age 60 or older, expectant mothers and anyone with an underlying health condition that makes them more vulnerable to illness can shop from 7 to 8 a.m., seven days a week, at any Hy-Vee store. All other customers hours are 8 am – 8 pm

Lewis and Clark Visitor Center is Closed to public until further notice. 

Meals on Wheels in Yankton will not be delivered daily, but instead on Monday’s and Friday’s.

Northwestern Energy public offices are closed to walk in’s, but payments can still be dropped off, paid by phone, or online.

The Board of Directors of The Yankton Area Banquet has suspended serving The Banquet until directive is received from the Center for Disease Control or the Federal/State government that it is safe for groups of 50 or more people to gather again.

Willcockson Eye Associate is closing as of March 19, and will be closed until March 30.

Schmeckfest 2020 has been postponed.

The Yankton Chamber of Commerce Office is now closed to the public until further notice.

The Yankton Chamber has postponed the Annual Social and Awards Event March 27th until a later date.

Summit Activities Center is Closed until further notice. Follow their Facebook page for updates.

The Center is Closed from March 16 – 27. Still providing Meals on Wheels. Supplemental food box distribution for low income seniors happening Friday, March 20th from 1-3 pm. Tax services suspended until March 20 and reassessed at that time. All other programs canceled until March 27 and reassessed at that time.

The Clothing Closet is Closed until further notice

United Way of Greater Yankton:

  • The Delta Dental Mobile Program scheduled for March 16-20 has been cancelled.
  • LINC Volunteer Events are cancelled until further notice.
  • SPARK Community Conversations are cancelled until further notice.
  • Big Friend Little Friend, In School Mentoring Program has suspended service until further notice. 

Walmart is now open from 6:00 A.M. – 11:00 P.M.

All Fast Food Restaurant’s (McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Subway) have closed their main lobby, but drive thrus continue to run as normal business hours.

Backroad Bar-B-Q will be Open Thursday, Friday & Saturday 4 pm – 10 pm.  Offering curbside pickup for orders to go.

RB Beers & Burgers are Closed Mondays.  Open noon to 9 pm Tuesday-Sunday.  Offering curbside pick up and delivery.


All events at Calvary Baptist Church are canceled until March 21.

Trinity Lutheran Church has cancelled all weekend services for March 21-22. During this time of suspended services at church, we invite you to join us for services online. Just go to and select the desired service to watch. To limit the possibility of our staff being exposed to the COVID-19 virus, all doors into the church will be locked. The church phone # is posted on the door to call to gain admittance

St. John’s Lutheran in Yankton has cancelled all activities through Friday (Mar. 20).
